Mac Home AV breaks TurboTax E-filing

Here's a bug report and work-around for use with Turbo Tax

Sophos Anti-Virus
Home Edition version 9.2.4
Threat detection engine 3.58.1
Threat data 5.13

TurboTax Premier 2014
Application 2014.r17.006
Build Mar 24, 2015, 9:42:06 PM

Symptoms:

1) Can’’’’t e-file

Two different error messages:

  1. An SSL error has occurred and a secure connection to the server cannot be made.
  2. Due to unexpected Internet transmission problems beyond our control, your returns were NOT received by the Intuit Electronic Filing Center.  You should re-file your returns now.

2) Can’’’’t check e-file status

Disabling Sophos Anti-Virus did not solve the problem, uninstalling with the Sophos removal tool allows TurboTax to file and check filing status.

  • Can you confirm how you disabled Sophos on the first test?  Did you disable just the on-access scanner, or did you disable web protection also?  I'm wondering if web filtering was the cause of the problem if TurboTax is attempting to make a web connection, web filtering could be the component and maybe disabling that or adding an allow site to the list would prevent the problem?

Web Protection options are available under Preferences.  You can disable both options and/or allow certain sites...
