Mal/Phish-A detected in old backup files - safe to leave?

Sophos has detected Mal/Phish-A in several of my older Mac OS Time Machine backup files. I have run the auto-removal which has not been successful and it recommends manual removal. As this would involve delving into backup files would it be safe to leave them where there are? This virus has not been detected in my current Mac OS hard drive files.
