Cannot uninstall Sophos

I accidentally deleted almost all of the files for Sophos including the uninstall.pkg file.  I have tried to go to the Library and follow every suggestion on the internet to completely uninstall the program and it has not worked.  When I try to install a new version on the computer, it says that there is an incompatible version still uninstalled.  Is there any downloadable uninstaller program or package available so I can remove the traces of the old Sophos program that would then allow me to install the new version?

  • Hi,

If any of the following still exists then delete it in Terminal using "sudo rm <path to file>" or "sudo rm -R <path to folder>". You can enter the path in Terminal by dragging the file or folder into the Terminal window.
You can also try by using the Finder but the last item is not normally visible.

/Applications - any .app starting Sophos
    /Library/Application Support/Sophos - entire folder (SAV 9 only)
/Library/Caches - all folders with com.sophos in name
    /Library/Contextual Menu Items/Sophos Anti-Virus.plugin (SAV 8 only)
/Library/Extensions - all .kext files with Sophos in name
    /Library/Frameworks/SAVI.framework & SUMScanKit.framework
/Library/LaunchAgents - all .plists with sophos in name
    /Library/LaunchDaemons - all com.sophos plists
    /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus - entire folder
/Library/usr/bin/sweep N.B. /Library/usr folder is invisible in the Finder.

If you did find and delete anything then try the installer again.

    Hope this helps.

  • I use an application called AppCleaner.  It is SO simple to use - all you have to do is launch it then just drag the unwanted app into the AppCleaner window.  There you get a preview of all the bits & pieces lurking around.  Then you just click on the DELETE button and everything goes into the Trash.

Just Google the name (AppCleaner) and download it.

  • 1) App Cleaner  presupposes that you still have the original App available.  So it's of no use in removing remnants of an old installation.

    2) I tried it with a fresh SAV installation and it did not list many of the files in /Library which are part of the product.

  • I enrolled in a frree Sophos cloud account for my Mac Laptop running Yosemite..The trial apparently expired, and I couldn't find the Sophos Uninstaller, so II used App Cleaner to remove Sophos appllication from my laptop.  Unfortunately, I still have the Sophos icon in the right menu bar and I have no idea how to remove it.

I have tried downloading the Sophos Uninstaller, and followed the instructions to enter in the Tampler Protection passcode in my account when launching the Uninstaller.  But it doesn't work.  I also tried disabling the Tamper Protection from within my Sophos Cloud account, and that doesn't work, either, even after waiting more than 15 minutes.  I am not sure whtehr I need to reboot my compouter for this to take effect.

Within the Sophos pulldown menu (the icon is a shield with an "x") on the top right of the Mac menu bar it says:

Failed to download update (greyed out)

Update Now (When I click on this I get "Could not contact primary server URL Error: 19January2015)

    Cancel Update (greyed out)

    Show Auto Update Window

    Open Scans

    Open Preferences

    Open Quarentine Manager

Can anyone help? I am just one little person, not a big company, and I feel like I have just created a mess. I am not knowledgeable about tech things and when I read about people using Terminal it really scares me. I really hope there is a simpler solution.
