Why do I now have TWO Sophos icons in my MacBook Pro menu bar?

I got a warning box about a threat, and deleted the threat this morning. This afternoon I noticed there are TWO identical Sophos icons in the menu bar- is this a bad thing?

  • I was successful at deleting the 2nd Sophos icon by restarting.

  • Hi Bob,

I manually updated then after it successfully checked, one of the icons went away. Now it's ok. I tried several reboots, it stays with one icon. I'll keep an eye on it.

Thank you for best customer service. It tells a lot about your product.

  • i went to go in the System Preferences, Users & Groups, Login Items. I have deleted ONE ACCOUNT SOPHOS and the second icon has disappeared. i have mountain lion-

  • I had the same problem with the two icons. It's the guest user service. If you have guest users enabled in your users and groups it appears to run double. i disabled the ability for guests to login to my Mac and the second icon disappeared. I'm running Mountain Lion and just started doing the double icon deal this morning. Was there a recent update?

  • Bob,

Running 10.8 and newest Sophos with a MacBok Pro and have the same 2 icons  appearing. I tried to delete the login item and can not delete it as the minus sign is greyed out when I try to delete it and I can't get rid of it or the second icon in the Menu Bar. At least there is now only one Sophos UI Server in the Activity Monitor, at least for now. Even if i use the Sophos remove tool it does not remove that file from Login.

Any ideas for removing that from login?

  • Bob's suggestion helped after trying a second time and restarting I have only one shield now.

    Thanks to all.

  • No need to restart a computer to get rid of the two shileds. just do the following:

    1. Search for Applescript Editor in Spotlight or launch it if you have that app on the Dock

    2. Write the following script:

    tell Application "SophosUIServer"

    quit

    end tell

    3. Compile and run it repeatedly until you have one shield. NOTE: you need to run it repeatedy because launchd will relaunch SophosUIServer as the app quits, but you can outsmart launchd by running the script several times. At least for me it worked. No need to restart your computer.

  • removing the loginitem and loging out and in again solved this for me - iMac late '09 OSX 10.7

  • [Can you check to see if you have a "login item" for the Sophos UI Server? Look in the System Preferences, Users & Groups, Login Items. You shouldn't have one when using OS X 10.8 (or 10.7, but you should have one for 10.4-10.6). If you have one, delete it. Log out, log in again. Should have a single shield.] I've been having the same problems as others reported - two shields in the menu bar. I could get rid of one by opening Activity Monitor and deleting one of them, but that's not a fix. What do I do when I open System Prefs/Users & Groups and find that the SophosUIServer (All Users) is greyed out and can't be removed, as you have suggested. I have always had the entry in all versions of Mac OS X. iMac 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo, 4 MB ram, OS X 10.8

FWIW, I've never had guest accounts active but the double icon has appeared anyway. When a Sophos update is done, whether manually or automatically, the second icon disappears.
