Allowed Websites

After upgrading my operating system to Mavericks, for some reason Sophos blocks one particular URL, even though I have added this URL to System Preferences > Web Protection > Allowed Websites. Is anyone else having an issue with the Allow Websites feature?

  • Can you give an example?  Maybe I can try and recreate this.

  • I'm having the same problem. The website in question is www.mydootv.com. Friday night it worked fine but on Saturday morning I couldn't even get to the website. The error page reads: Gateway Timeout: can't connect to remote host.  I get this same error message with both my Safari and Firefox browsers.

My MAC runs Snow Leopard 10.6.8. The FREE Sophos Anti-Virus Home Edition that I RE-LOADED today is version 9.0.8, modified Feb 5, 2014.

    Background Highlights:

    1.  Several months ago Sophos identified mydootv as a danger and would not allow it to be accessed. I entered mydootv as an exception into Sophos and the problem was solved.

    2. I've been in voice and email contact ith the mydootv tech in Thailand. He says the site is up and running fine. He logged on to his computer as me and everything worked fine.

    3. At his urging, I removed Sophos Anti-Virus from my computer. The mydootv page popped up just like it should.

    4. I reloaded Sophos and again I could not even get to the mydootv web site, but the error messages for Safari and Firefox now cited things like the server may be too busy.

    5. Suddenly, just trying one more time, I clicked on mydootv and it worked just fine. My wife and I were leaving for a few errands so I stopped the stream. When I returned an hour later and clicked on the stopped streaming image, the  "Gateway Timeout: can't connect to remote host." error message re-appeared.

    6. I notified the Thai tech and he emailed to do the following:

    QUOTE

    1. Open Sophos Anti-Virus, by right clicking on the Sophos shield in the system tray and selecting 'Open Sophos Endpoint Security and Control'
    2. Click 'Configure anti-virus and HIPS' then click 'Authorization'
    3. Select the 'Websites' tab
    4. Click 'Add' to place in an entry in one of the following formats:
    5. put  www.mydootv.com on the domain name. CLOSE QUOTE

I don't see those options with my version of Sophos Anti-Virus.

    7. I read on the web that the Gateway Timeout problem can be fixed by doing stuff to the computer's registry. I'm not qualified to go mucking around the registry.

    Thanks,

    Steve

  • An update. Since I posted a few hours ago my initial explanation of my inability to access mydootv.com (other sites were not a problem), I can once again access mydootv. Nothing was done by me to change anything on my computer. So, the question may be, why does my ability to access mydootv come and go?

    :1019467
  • More of the same. It has been a couple of hours since I regained connection with mydootv..that connection just disappeared again.

    :1019469
  • I've tested on Mavericks with 9.2.2 and tried to access the site in Safari - it works.  Maybe won't in an hour - I'll keep an eye on it.

The instructions the tech sent to allow the site are for the Windows program.  For Mac see page 21 of the Help manual: http://www.sophos.com/en-us/medialibrary/PDFs/documentation/savmosx_9c_heng.pdf

Can you add the site, leave it for a while and report back if it helps or not.

  • My apologies for not responding sooner. The site worked fine after my last post and continues to work fine (I just logged on to it)...It hasn't been used for a couple of weeks because my wife is in Thailand visiting family. I will pass on your guidance about Mac to the Thai technician. I have not acted on your guidance since the website is working...Will readress the situation when wife returns in a few months. Thanks for your help.
