on Sav Linux, open LibreOffice or MS Office files with Libre Office gives error reading file

on sav-linux free (version 9.something, just downloaded and installed yesterday) using Libre Office to open xls, xlsx, or odt files (I don't have any doc or docx files to try with) results in the error above.

Based on some reading here and in the KB, it sounds like a talpa issue.

NOTE: using Libre Office to open a PDF or plain text file does not have this problem.

for the moment, I've disabled  scanning on open on that drive, til such time as this problem goes away.

Suggestions appreciated, thanks in advance!

    Centos 7.x up to date.

    one possible factor is that the files I was testing with live on a Synaptics NAS box and it is accessed via SMB.

    Also:I switched to fanotify and the problem went away but then I encountered the (known) issue with the 30-second black screen. I turned off fanotify and went back to talpa, and disabled on-access-scanning on that drive. (even on a local drive, when using fanotify file access seemed quite noticeably slower.)
