Safeguard 5.61 installation fails "too many users logged on to the machine"

Hi folks,

I have tried installing Safeguard 5.61 on several machines and got the same error message "Installation failed. You cannot install the encryption agent because too many users are logged on to the machine." I have logged off, back on again, and rebooted with the same result on all. I can't help but feel like I'm missing one dumb detail. Thoughts?

  • Hello LPotter,

    Safeguard 5.61

are you talking about SDE/FDE integrated with SEC? The message sounds familiar but slightly rephrased. IIRC you get it in response to a Protect computers attempt when 1) a user is logged on on the endpoint and 2) the user is not the one used in the Protect computers wizard. Wanted to see what happens, got this error and said huh? I'm the only one logged on and besides - fast user switching is disabled. So, how come? :smileyvery-happy:

  • I have tried installing it from the console using the Protect Computers Wizard, and installing it directly on the endpoint by navigating it to the SophosUpdate folder on the server. I have used my credentials in the wizard while logged on to the machine as myself with the same result. I'm not sure what else to try.

  • Hello LPotter,

IIRC the setup bootstrapper writes a log (%ProgramData%\Sophos\Sophos SafeGuard Installers\InstallCache\BootLog.txt)  which also contains the error message. Can't remember if it enumerates the logged on users or just gives the count though. Maybe I "found" the second account with Task Manager/Process Explorer or from a Security Event. Anyway, Protect with no user logged on did work.
