"Fast" encryption. What is it and what does it do?

It's not in the docs.  Would like a little more detail.

Thanks,

  • Sorry, I meant to specify that this is for the Mac Sophos.

  • Hi Alex,

actually there is some information in the manual:

To enhance encryption speed, check the Fast Mode option in the lower left corner of the Disk management pane.

So basically this means when using the fast encryption method the process priority will be raised and more CPU will be used to encrypt the hard drive which will increase the encryption speed.

  • Awesome.  That's exactly what I needed.  Dan, since nothing else is going on with the Mac at that time, is there a reason why this would not be the default?  The reason why I ask is that on an iMac from 2009, it takes 9 hours to decrypt a 320 GB partition.

  • Hi Alex,

basically since we cannot ensure that there is really nothing going on at that time. We used to have customers (especially when using Windows) at which the user just keeps on working just as normal during the encryption process and they should not be slowed down during that time.

  • Good point Dan.  However, when faced with that screen on the Mac side, I had no idea that I could continue working, and no idea what Fast mode did.

It's possible that a little bit of text would be remarkably helpful at that point, telling the user that they can continue working and just what Fast mode really does.

    Cheers,

  • Hi Alex,

thanks for the hint - it's good to have comments and remarks from people not being so close to the product as we are. This remembers you that some things are not as obvious as they seem to be :smileyhappy:

I will forward your suggestion to DEV although I cannot say if they will change things or not.

Anyway again thanks for the hint!

    Regards

    Dan

  • Heh.  Thanks  Dan.  Ya, we all live too close to our products and it always requires a set of fresh eyes to see what we have all gotten used to.

Seems like it's the nature of the beast called development.
