Hotspot security question

I am setting up a hotspot using a third party access point.
It is working.

My question is about encryption.  Most people here suggest setting the WIFI encryption to off for the hotspot.

Wouldn't this expose all of the non SSL traffic on the guest network to sniffing?  Or am I missing something?

  • You aren't missing anything; that's the nature of using a public wifi hotspot.  The hotspot functionality is not meant to secure the traffic in the air, rather, restrict / control access to the wifi network itself.  It works the same as a HotSpot in a restaurant, hotel, etc.

If you want to create a "guest" network with encrypted traffic, you'll need to ditch the HotSpot functionality and use WPA/WPA2.
