Hotspot security strength?

Hello:

I know this may be a difficult question to answer.

We make it a practice of using the best encryption available.

When setting up a Hotspot we turn off the encryption and rely on the Hotspot code to prevent access to restricted devices. How strong is this mechanism?

We may feel safe exposing the corporate network behind a WPA2 wireless link but do we get anywhere the same strength if we replace the PSK with a voucher?

  • The hotspot feature (when configured with a unsecured wireless network as you mention) is only meant as a means of controlling access, not to secure access --- the hotspot function does not perform any encryption function, etc. on the traffice that passes through it.  It's best to only use the hotspot functionality for public wifi access, guest wifi access, etc... for networks that should be encrypted over the air, WPA/WPA2 with PSK/RADIUS authentication is needed.
