Extra ASG because 21AP's

Hello all,

We recently changed our firewall to Astaro, the ASG220

We are very pleased with it and would like to invest in our Wireless-Infrastructure.

In total, we would have 14 AP30's and 7 AP10's
The only purpose of the AP10's is to provide WiFi for a (or 2) Wireless barcode-scanners.

Do we need an extra device to handle the Wireless part of the network ?
If so, can we buy a ASG110(120) to handle the job (only for the Wireless part, nothing else) ?

What about the license ? We now have the Full Guard Premium.

    There isn't a hard limit to the number of AP devices that can be connected to an ASG and has more to do with how much wifi traffic would need to be processed.  The recommendation that I've seen is 10-12 APs for a 220.  If you have a newer revision of the 220 and only moderate wifi usage, you could get away with more.

    As far as licensing:  Webadmin>>Management>>Licensing.  Is Wireless Security enabled?  If not, contact your reseller.

    Licensing is Ok, we already have some AP30's.

    I don't want to stress the 220 to much and would consider to add à second Astaro-device just for WiFi.

    As Scott said, it's a matter of traffic.
    How much simultaneous bandwidth is going through the total of all the wireless networks?

    Take a look at the graphs under reporting - hardware; if your CPU and RAM aren't over-utilized, you're fine.

    Well, if you do need a second Astaro, it would probably be best to get another 220 or maybe see about an upgrade to a 320.  A 110/120 doesn't have a lot of processing power and you'd probably find 4-6 APs would be the absolute limit.  Without any traffic metrics, you really won't know if you'll need the second ASG until you try the rollout with your current one.

    If you want to use "Separate Zone" mode (in which all traffic is backhauled to the ASG), you will need a bigger box if you expect a non-trivial number of clients or traffic.

    If you use "Bridge to LAN" (or VLAN) modes (in which the APs just bridge traffic to the local ethernet) you should be able to use the 220, unless you expect a large number of concurrent clients (100+).

    Jochen, this is a question your reseller should answer for you.  You haven't given enough information for anyone to make a more-precise recommendation here, but, in any case, you want your reseller to "have some skin in the game" by making a recommendation.

    It's unclear why you're mixing in the AP 10 devices.  The AP 10s work exactly like the AP 30s, but they have less range and can handle fewer users on each.  You can have up to 8 SSIDs or networks on your Astaro wireless infrastructure.
