AP15 fails to allow connections occasionally [UTM Home license] - logs help?

AP15 single AP - no mesh

I have been running UTM home for six years (2015) and the AP55 for five years (x-mas 2016).

Last night, like happens a few times a month, my AP55 stopped allowing client association. We were using Wi-Fi up until approximately 11:30pm with no trouble, when we went upstairs to settle down for bed and check emails before sleep. Both of our mobile devices had no connection to Wi-Fi. In Wi-Fi settings on each device, we observed the SSID disappear, then reappear, but fail to connect. the cycle is still repeating now, 9 hours later.

I don't see much, other than the "STA disconnected" and "port 1(eth0) entered forwarding state". Or maybe I should be noting the "configuration change" that I didn't make?

Typically, when this happens, I power-cycle the AP55, as there is never anything obvious about the failure in the log. Can we determine if this is a repeated de-auth attack? Is this wireless stepping-on occurring? Configuration error? Firmware problem?

The AP is still currently in this state (though will bounce it soon) and I have uploaded yesterday's archived log and today's copied/pasted for context/clues.

    The disassociation and configuration change are normal that I've seen in wireless APs.  Disassociating is just a timeout for a client.  If it has no traffic for x amount of time, it will disassociate from the client.  It's like a sleep mode if the client isn't active.

    I believe the configuration change you see is the AP looking for any update to a configuration and may do that ~ every 4 hours or so that I've noticed.  Your lease time seems a bit short.

    Have you gone through the usual stuff - replacing cables?  Checking signal on your lower level?  Just to be sure? 

    Is your AP on a static channel?  I had to end up doing that for me to get Wifi stability.

    TY for the reply.

    When you say disassociation is normal and part of an idle time-out, I am confused. My clients could not reconnect at all, and were actively using Wi-Fi at the time of the dropped connections. Both of us in bed with our mobile open going, "Huh? what just happened? Did you just lose Wi-Fi? Dang it, here we go again..."

    Cable is good, and has been swapped out anyway for good measure. Has happened like this for years, and I have had multiple different cables in that time. 

    What do you mean about checking signal "on the lower level?" If you mean signal strength, my Wi-Fi heatmap is excellent all around my house, and outside, for about 100 feet beyond the walls. We were inside, about 25 feet away at the time.

    I have the AP set to a static channel, as dynamic seemed to drop us more often, and wasn't needed anyway where I live.

    Don't confuse disassociation with being dropped - that's not how that works.  Disassociation is for idle clients.  If you are active, you don't get disassociated.

    Yes I was referring to your signal strength to make sure you were getting enough signal so its not just dropping you.

    I've seen what you are talking about before on my own Wifi, and its been happening since ~ 9.705 for me.  I would literally be on my phone online, and Wifi is dropped out of nowhere - and I'm 10 feet from one of my APs.  

    I just downloaded your log - you should have perhaps posted that whole thing, because what might be your issue is not what you posted, specifically this line:

    Failed to stop TX DMA, queues=0x002!

    I know this was a bug that was fixed in DD-WRT, so I would think this is probably an issue with the AP firmware.  Generally this is an error with a tolerance problem in a MHz range.

    Are you running on 2.4 GHz or 5GHz?  Or both?  If both, I would turn off 2.4 and see if it works.

    How is your Wifi set up?  Are you using a RADIUS server?  You appear to have a line for it on your log.  Most home users wouldn't use RADIUS.  Is it bridged to your LAN or do you have a different setup?  These could be a factor as well.

    I saw that log entry referring to RADIUS as well, and assumed it's a generic behavior, as I do not and never have had RADIUS at home. Waste of resources for my use-case. No need to externally-authenticate my few clients. I am bridged to LAN.

    No, it won't show the firmware version, as I think you can TFTP in and see that, but I don't know how that would work specific to an AP. You can try using the Flash Tool that Sophos has for APs.  This may work for you to reset the AP firmware back, and you don't have to register the AP again, so it does keep the config.

    I went and checked mine before I posted that to be sure, and I don't have that entry in any of my logs which prompted me to ask.

    15/30 are pretty old and have been discontinued.  I have the old firmware flash tool and I haven't used the one I linked, but it has straightened mine out in the past.  I'm at this point wanting to replace what I have, I'm just not so sure I want to continue with the Sophos line much longer.  

    I'm courageous enough to re-flash them to give it a try when I have issues with them, and redoing the AP isn't a bad thing.  Hell I've been having to redo my entire UTM about every other major update because of 'something' going wrong that I can't figure out.  About to do this again because I can no longer reach my cameras on a specific port outside my network.  Nothing has changed on my end and it's literally stopped working for me with no rhyme or reason.  I firmly believe it's the UTM after an update.

    It's really just going to involve more troubleshooting the issue, and wireless issues are so rough to figure out sometimes, because, well it's wireless.  It has so many factors to consider.  Even something like electro interference can play a big part in it.  The error I found in your log you uploaded though, if it was me - I would redo my wireless setup first, then do a wireless survey (there's things like Wireshark you can use to help figure things out like this).  Then I would use the flash tool on the AP.  Last, I would get a second one and try it out/replace the AP because of age.

    It's EoS, but not EoL yet (3/2023), and I thought it was still receiving firmware at each U2D update.

    Yes, as a matter of fact, I see this in the log (irrelevant info omitted):

    I know the entire UTM line is going to fade away eventually, but I STILL don't find XG to be a comparable product. Now that you mentioned the AP15 going EoL, I see that they are for sale for less than $30 compared [EDIT: I think that was just a warranty extension] to $160 for the APX120. I am all for new hardware, but this AP doesn't need new features, in my mind. It covers my entire house and most of my yard. 

    I guess I'll weigh my options regarding upgrade to the APX120, since that will likely bring me into XG when the time comes (if it does), or just deal with the older firmware when they EoL it. $30 is a pretty good price, and hard to pass up. Maybe the other soon-to-be-EoL models are down in price too.

    Yeah, they probably are, and there are a couple of people here to contact for purchasing those.  I run old ones myself, but they are still going.  I'll change them when they die or I replace Sophos altogether.  I'm in the same boat with you about XG as well.  I've tried it more than once, and the UI is great, but... yeah.

    At any rate, I'd test it out with the firmware update you show there and see if it solves the issues, and go from there.  Let us know how it goes and if it solved the problem, as I am genuinely curious.
