Motorola MC9200 Handheld Authentication

We are setting up an SG310 UTM v9.411 to replace our old firewall. I am still in the testing phase and learning how the system works.

We have a number of Motorola handheld scanners running Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 Classic operating system (CE OS 5.2).  These units need internet access in order to connect to our cloud based ERP system.

Our old firewall was setup as a proxy server and these handhelds used their proxy settings to authenticate to the firewall via local local users.I have tried the same thing on the SG310, setting up local users with local authentication but I'm not having any luck getting the handhelds to connect.

Does anyone else have experience getting units like this to authenticate and connect to a UTM?

  • Hi, Robert, and welcome to the UTM Community!

The UTM doesn't offer automatic authentication for Local users.  If the Motorola scanners can run the Sophos Authentication Agent (SAA), they could login with that.  Simplest - if you have Active Directory, the Web Proxy could authenticate off of that.

Just a heads-up.  I have twice fixed first-time UTM configurations done by talented CCIEs.  I wound up billing twice what I would have charged to do the initial design and configuration.  There's no question that the UTM is very easy to administer and modify after having been properly configured.  WebAdmin is a GUI that manipulates databases of objects and settings.  A single change there can cause the Configuration Daemon to rewrite hundreds of lines of the code used to run the UTM.  To get an idea of some of the subtleties, read through the Rulz.
