Solved: Getting JAVA To Update

This is my first post here...

These forums have been very helpful to me in the last few weeks and I want to "pay it forward" by documenting solutions to particular issues I have encountered while using/configuring Sophos UTM Home Edition (currently version 9.309-3)... Especially if it may be helpful to someone else in the future.

I was having trouble getting Java Update to complete its process on my computers (Win7, Win8.1). It would notify that an update was available but it could not complete a download or install the update.

After searching the forum I was able to gather some helpful info that allowed me to get Java Updates working again. Using the principle of “least privilege” I tested the proposed solutions to see if everything suggested was necessary to the fix or not. Through trial and error, I removed any unnecessary (at least for my setup) proposed settings and I came up with a simple solution:

  • Web Protection > Filtering Options > Exceptions Tab > New Exception List
  • Check “Extension Blocking”
  • “For all requests” choose “Matching these URLs” from the dropdown
  • Add these two “Target Domains”:
  • ^https?://([A-Za-z0-9.-]*\.)?sun\.com/
  • ^https?://([A-Za-z0-9.-]*\.)?javadl\.oracle\.com/
  • Then “Save” and make sure the status is Enabled.

Hope this helps someone else!

  • I tried this on my UTm but for some reason it doesn't appear to work. The user keeps getting the http://java.com/403error when they perform a Java Update. I'm nit sure if its the version of Java that may cause the issue

  • I was having the same error so changed my exception list to the follow...

    ^https?://([A-Za-z0-9.-]*\.)?sun\.com/
    ^ftp?://([A-Za-z0-9.-]*\.)?deploy\.akamaitechnologies\.com/
    ^ftp?://([A-Za-z0-9.-]*\.)?javadl\.oracle\.com/
    ^ftp?://([A-Za-z0-9.-]*\.)?java\.com/
    ^ftp?://([A-Za-z0-9.-]*\.)?.oracle\.com/
    ^http?://([A-Za-z0-9.-]*\.)?.oracle\.com/
    ^https?://([A-Za-z0-9.-]*\.)?.oracle\.com/
    ^http?://([A-Za-z0-9.-]*\.)?java\.com/
    ^https?://([A-Za-z0-9.-]*\.)?java\.com/
    ^http?://([A-Za-z0-9.-]*\.)?sdlc-esd\.oracle\.com/
    ^https?://([A-Za-z0-9.-]*\.)?deploy\.akamaitechnologies\.com/

    It appears to have worked

  • Thanks for the great info. Here's an additional exception I needed today. ^http?://([A-Za-z0-9.-]*\.)?javadl\.oracle\.com/
