Xbox live

I noticed that after setting UTM as my default gateway I could no longer install or update games on my xbox. After a couple hours I discovered this was caused by the antivius scanning option.

My solution was a static dhcp entry for the xbox assigned to a new web filter profile with AV scanning disabled. Ran into a similar problem with a Samsung Blu-Ray player where Netflix would crash at 6% or 25% when buffering a new stream. This is also working with a static assignment to the new filter profile.

Just wanted to add it to the board in case someone else comes looking.

Thanks for the shared wisdom.

If you want, rather then creating a separate profile you can create an Exception, coming from that Source IP that skips AV Scanning. Might be easier to manage.

There are several posts about getting an Xbox Live account working with the firewall and web proxy. I already had the NAT and regular firewall rules set up. I just had to add the Web Filter Exception. Example attached. After reading this post, I see it might just be AV scanning, but I thought it had something to do with authentication. If I have "excluded" too much, share your opinions please. Thanks! Bob.

The recommendation is not to use .* inside a regex, especially when trying to match domain names. Your current exception will match google.com/search?xbox.com. Please see the other exceptions for an example of how to write an regex that only matches domain names. Alternately use this tool: Quick RegEx for URLs | UTM Tools

Also, you are skipping all logging. Unless this is a problem for you I would leave it on. Reporting and diagnosing problems work better when there is logging.

Thanks Michael - I will take a look at the RegEx for URLs link. As far as the logging goes, I THOUGHT when I unchecked those it actually STOPPED logging (and I do want logging.) I could be wrong on that though.

One other question - there are browsers available on the Xbox that are now protected by the UTM proxy, but apps like YouTube don't appear to be since they are SSL.

I am OK blocking YouTube on the Xbox in my house - should I create a Web Filtering Profile just for the Xbox to accomplish that or do you have a better idea?

For those still struggling with xbox live... this is what work for me:

Web Protection>Filtering Options>Misc add your xbox to the source of Transparent Mode Skiplist
