  • What Bruce said. 1GB is the maximum supported memory configuration for a 220 at the moment.

I feel your pain, I've tried to get my 220 approved for 2GB upgrade in the past. At some point, Astaro will probably blanket approve all 220 v2+ for 2GB RAM when the minimum system requirements become higher than 1GB. This will possibly happen for 8.2x with the inclusion of application awareness.

This is actually a standard practice in the industry for network devices where hardware replacement is covered by the support agreement. Cisco, Juniper, Dell, HP, Sonicwall, etc all do the same thing. Astaro is protecting itself from people trying to RMA devices after they fry the motherboard by using cheap memory or attempting to turn a 220 into a higher class of device by upgrading the RAM and CPU themselves, thereby "cheating" on the licensing for the higher powered device.

  • Well said Scott, that is precisely the reason behind the memory upgrade restrictions--and folks do try to "cheat."  That said, when it's really needed, I have had them approve such upgrades... like back (way back) when the 110/120 class appliances came with 256MB of RAM (running Version 6)... at many sites I was seeing some performance issues--they (Astaro) authorized me to upgrade the appliances to 512MB -- a few months later, they were all shipping with 512MB [:)]
