Strange behavior with smart tv

Hello,

I have a Sony smart tv running in my network that's connected to the internet, can run apps, Netflix, etc. I'm encountering something strange with it since yesterday. To make sure I can run the apps and Netflix I've made a fixed netwerk entry from the DHCP server list and added that to Web Protection > Filering Options > Misc > Skip Transparant Mode ... This worked for a while (a bit more then a week), but suddenly stopped working and all apps disappeared, app connections where not possible and Netflix from the smart tv can not be reached.

When I removed the fixed entry from network definitions, I got a warning message stating the same entry was also fixed (I guess it means the mac address) to a different IP address from the internal network. But I cannot find that IP address in my network lists (also cannot ping it), and a lookup on the smart tv revealed that this ip address is not used from the tv too. After removing the fixed entry the smart tv can reach and install all apps and Netflix starts, but hangs on 25% when loading something. The same behavior I found before I added it to Skip Transparant etc.

After making a new fixed entry in network definitions, I'm getting the same behavior as  described above. I'm stumped, it looks like the mac address of the smart tv is somehow stuck on a non existing IP address?? Is there a way to flush things so it's not stuck anymore?

    When you gave the TV a static IP, was it one that was outside the scope offered by the DHCP server instance? From the Help/Admin guide:

    Note – To avoid an IP address clash between regularly assigned addresses from the DHCP pool and those statically mapped make sure that the latter are not in the scope of the DHCP pool. For example, a static mapping of 192.168.0.200 could result in two systems receiving the same IP address if the DHCP pool is 192.168.0.100 – 192.168.0.210.

    It was the first address inside the scope of the DHCP pool. When I found that out I changed/deleted it, But somehow it "stayed" inside the UTM software. I cannot find it via the UTM GUI when searching for it, so I cannot find a way to delete it.

    Create your new Static host entry for the TV in the UTM, giving it an address outside the scope given by DHCP. On the TV, enable/disable networking or restart the TV and it should get the new address.

    It worked for getting the tv a new fixed ip address. But after that no connections to outside the internal network were possible at all and tv apps, netflix, etc. did not work. Not even after I added the host to the web filter exception list. It really is a pain on the Sophos UTM to get streaming media on TV and other streaming devices working. Never had those problems with Sonicwalls.

    So I deleted the host again and let the tv get an IP address from the dhcp server. After that made this a static host entry. Internet connection works but apps are not working. When I delete the fixed host for the tv alltogether, I still get the message that the mac is also used by ip address x.x.x.50. Still deleting and after that apps now load into the tv screen, but none is working stating there is no access. I must say I'm getting more regrets installing the Sophos instead of a new Sonicwall becaus it takes so much time getting network devices to work. But I'm probably missing something ;-)

    I guess the Sony smart tv is not a big fan of Sophos UTM's.

    I tested somewhat more and I'm really getting strange results. A soon as make a static entry for the smart tv apps and netflix are not getting any connection outside the internal network anymore. It makes no difference if I include the mac address or not (just giving the DHCP given ip addr a DNS name). Also adding the dns name to the web protection exclude list doesn't make a difference in behavior.

    A soon as I remove every static reference to the smart tv (so it just has a DHCP given address) apps on the smart tv are loading and Netfox starts. Unfortunately it hangs on 25% when loading a movie or series.

    When I completely disable web filtering (turning it off) everything runs fine, so its something in web filtering that's causing the error.

    Is there a possibility to turn off the web filtering completely for one device, without making it into a host with a static entry?

    You can create an exception for web protection in filtering options, you will have to create a dns host for your TV or make it static. I made mine static, if you goto network services DHCP you will see the leases find your TV and click make static. Then its static. Go back to web protection - filtering option, then create an exception. You will want to exclude it from most of the protection, then at the bottom you have a dropdown under for all requests. Choose from these networks, this allows you to add a single host. If you havent create a new host device for your TV. Save this and enable it.

    Hopefully it will work if its anything like mine?

    Hi,

    Tried it, but not working. Same behavior as reported earlier. As soon as I make the TV "static" all connections with apps etc are lost and apps removed. Error is "service unavailable". Doesn't matter in what exception list I put the host definition in. Only remedy is completely switching off web protection, but if I take that seriously it's better to bring the UTM back to the shop ;-)

    Create a host outside DHCP pool.

    Skip that host from Transparent Web Filter

    Create a rule in the Firewall to allow that host reach any service to any and thats it

    Is not Sony or UTM problem. Check Date/time on Sony just to be sure
