SENT CONTROL [username]: 'AUTH_FAILED' (status=1) / user="[username]" caller="openvpn" reason="DENIED"

Just for your Information:

We had a user who was not able to connect to the VPN, after we switched from Sophos SSL VPN Client to OpenVPN Client.

Every time hi tried to connect, he got an authentication error.

The openvpn.log showed:

SENT CONTROL [username]: 'AUTH_FAILED' (status=1)

The aua.log showed:

user="[username]" caller="openvpn" reason="DENIED"

Other user did not have this issue.

I tried different things to solve the problem.

In the end, I had to:

  • uninstall all VPN Clients
  • delete all folders for of the VPN Clients from C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files (x86)
  • delete every entry for Sophos VPN from the Windows registry,
  • reinstall the OpenVPN Client and import the configuration again

btw, the last supported OpenVPN Client for UTM 9.714-4 is OpenVPN Client 2.5.8.

Edit:

After exporting the VPN Configuration file, you can manually add the option "data-ciphers AES-256-CBC" for example.
This way, the config will work with OpenVPN 2.6
