Can You Repurpose a Red 15 or other RED Appliance for General Use?

I know that you can repurpose the various SG and XG firewall appliances for all kinds of uses. You can run Sophos UTM (of course), boot Linux or UNIX and make it into a server, or even install a different firewall on it (e.g., Pfsense). ... but I digress. I am asking about RED appliances.

I have a RED 15 with no future and I wonder whether it can be booted into Linux or repurposed in some other way (other than as a RED appliance)?

  • Some other constraints (i.E. no realtime clock) limit it too, but for a small iptables-based firewall, a GUI and maybe DNS/DHCP/RADIUS it should be sufficient. Many people here in Germany use to monitor their solar panels with boxes of this size (often a Fritz!Box or a Pi).
