Unable to setup Static Broadband

Subscribe to a new static broadband. If I plug the connection from ISP directly to my notebook with the settings below, internet works well.

IP x.x.x.220

255.255.255.248

GW x.x.x.217

Did a speedtest and got the ip of x.x.x.220.

Now setting up an interface in Sophos 115.

IP x.x.x.220/29

GW x.x.x.217

And i get error in LINK and State is up. No internet connection at all. Since its a 29 netmask, i change the GW to x.x.x.219 and i get internet connection. Did a speedtest and the IP came out to be the GW IP ( x.x.x.219 ) and i suppose my public ip should be x.x.x.220 ?

I reverted the settings back to what provided by ISP. Still cant get the internet to work. The link is always error. With the same settings, it works directly on my notebook.

Am i missing anything ( beside MASQ ) as the main connection is still down.

  • With a /29 mask you should have a subnet from x.x.x.216 to x.x.x.223, where 216 is the network address and 223 the broadcast. What sounds a bit strange to me is that your gateway shall be 217 with a laptop and 219 with the UTM connected. Sure that it is a /29 network with 5 public IPs or that it isn't a /30 with 2 IPs where one is the gateway?

Some provider routers have problems with autosensing interfaces, in those cases the provider should be able to give you the informations how to configure your WAN interface (10/100/1000 Full/Half Duplex).

Thank you, in the end is the ISP side for making mistake over the IP provided and the gateway.
