I do have CLI access, and due to exteriencing this repeatedly in the past, was testing this on a brand new VM build to prove I'm not just crazy. This SERIOUSLY looks like bad documentation or a bug.
In any event, the guide from here: https://community.sophos.com/kb/en-us/115346 under the section titled "All password reset procedure" says that to change the loginuser and root passwords in CLI, use these commands:
- Type:
passwd loginuser
- Enter and re-enter a new password for the loginuser account.
- Type:
passwd root
- Enter and re-enter a new password for the root account.
When I do this, it says it changed the passwords successfully for each account, however I cannot login to SSH ever again and have to restore from backup or change the passwords from the GUI. I have done this repeatedly, with different passwords, and even copied and pasted my passwords to ensure they are correct, and even done it on Various versions from 9.2 to 9.3 and 9.4 and 9.5! IT NEVER WORKS!
This has been an issue since at least the 9.2 days and I have to say I'm tired of non-existent and/or poor CLI documentation and bad, untested guides for Sophos products.
