Unable to get external IP on Sophos Home Edition UTM.

Hello all.

I'm setting up Sophos Home Edition here at my house. It is a software install on a spare computer I fixed up.

I have Comcast ISP. I'm putting the Comcast router into bridged mode and linking it to the Sophos PC to my Intel dual ported NIC, and from there to my switch on the LAN.

Only problem is, the External interface is not getting an IP. Has anyone else had the same issues before?

Thanks!

  • Couple of possible solutions:

    * your comcast service may come with either a DHCP or a static IP-connection. Most home connections use DHCP, so make sure your interface is configured accordingly.

    * your comcast service may have registered a MAC-address to which it will give an IP-address. You might need to either have comcast register your new MAC-address or configure the currently configured MAC-address on your external interface.

  • Comcast gateways, while in bridge mode, only provide one active IP and associate it to the first MAC it detects. So if you have had it attached to anything else, you will need follow these steps.

    1. make sure the cable in the the NIC that you want to use

    2. pull the plug on the Comcast gateway

    3. put the unit back in

    4. wait

After approx 3-5 minutes, probably closer to the 5, of the unit initializing, your NIC should have received it's IP address from the Comcast network. Any time you need to move the connection to a new NIC, you will have to follow the same steps because the device will always remember the last connected MAC until it is power cycled...

    Thanks,

    Brian
