IN and OUT

in Hi,

I was looking to the network usage and something is not clear for me and may be someone can explain it to me,

if I go to the network usage and choose the top client I see an external IP

I understand what service and protocol means. I also the client means the machine that initiat the connection

what I dont get is the IN% and out %

the in % shows 500mb and the OUT % shows 3GB

is this means the external IP has send 3 gb data to the a server in the network? or it means the internal server has send 3gb data to that external IP?
