Host names/ DNS Issues

Using the home version, I am running DHCP, and DNS on the UTM itself, In reporting I get this:

In DHCP IPv4 Lease table I get this:

As you can see in the DHCP table the 10.0.1.7 device is labeled Ambers-Air however in the network usage report it shows NXDOMAIN for that device why is the host name not shown? I also get a lot of times the report showing almost all the devices as RESOLVING Also in the DHCP table why are there so many "unknown" devices, I am positive all my devices have names.

  • Blue, if you want Ambers-Air to appear in Reporting, you need to create a Host with static mapping for the device. Be sure to pick an IP that's not in the dynamic range of the DHCP server.

  • So the only way to make the names show in reporting is via a static map? That kinda stinks, why can it not pull that info from the DHCP info? Not that it would help much almost everything shows "unknown" any way to correct that issue as well? Or am I looking to have to go around and find each device and creat a static map for each as well.

What i don't understand is "Ambers-Air" has a name in the dhcp list why do the rest not have names?

  • In sites that have Active Directory and a Windows DHCP server, only a Request Route is necessary. Otherwise, yes, you'll need to create a Static Entry for each device you want too have identified by name.

  • So "Ambers-Air" isn't a static entry so how does that one show a name in the table? I only have one static entry and it is my Linux server, however several of my devices show names (Ambers-Air for ex.) while others don't. What causes that?

  • the UTM may or may not have the avahi-daemon installed. Im not sure if there is a way to install it either. Ambers-Air is a macbook air im going to guess, which has Bonjour installed. Bonjour will send out the hostname of the device to the UTM. I have the same deal on my home setup where a lot of the devices are [unknown]. I just created static addresses for a lot of my devices and created a network map with ips to names. You could run an application like Netscan on your computer to resolve dns names and figure out which devices are which.
