Spam getting through - how to tighten the filter up a little?

Is there any way to tweak the spam filter? We get 30 000 mail a day of which 90% are spam.

But we still get the odd one or two through and it's not nice when its the MD sending you the spams he received.

Any tips?

  • It's the nature of the beast, Louis.  The Proxy calculates a signature based on the content of the message, ctasd submits that to CYREN's servers and an answer comes back that determines if the email is rejected, quarantined or delivered.  I find more false positives than false negatives.  If this is just the top guy complaining, maybe you can add a product like SpamBayes to his workstation.

Then again, most such complaints aren't about "real" spam.  People inadvertently sign up for a mailing list and then don't realize that they need to unsubscribe both from the current mailing and the master list.

Show us a spam with its headers so that we can see which problem you're having.

  • It was a gambling debt one. Strange thing is, if I try to forward it on, the UTM catches it outbound and reports it as spam!

We got hit with 30 000 emails yesterday (about 90% spam) so today I've put the Country blocking on again which seems to have dropped it considerably.

I might just keep that on and when we get the odd issue ie an email to a country that we need to post to, put an exception in.

  • Just for other users info. Since we enabled the Country blocking, our spam has dropped considerably. Not the answer to everything but it has worked in our case.

The only thing we have to watch out for is the odd email that may come from those countries to which we will place an exception.
