550 bounce not sent back to internal server

UTM is used as a smarthost for outbound as well as inbound SMTP

An outbound email failed with a 550 as per the below

2015-07-04 13:38:04 shop@domain.com P= R=dnslookup T=remote_smtp: SMTP error from remote mail server after end of data: host mailgw.domain.com [1.2.3.4]: 550 We do not accept zip files by email. Please contact the intended recipient.

The 550 was not then sent back to originating internal mail server which meant that the sender was not aware that the original email had bounced.

Is there a setting that would cause this behavior ?

  • Not to my knowledge.  Does the user confirm that a bounce message was not received?  If you look in the Mail Manager on the 'SMTP Log' tab, what do you see related to this email?

    Cheers - Bob
