UTM home on UTM 220 appliance; can't connect to eth0 (webadmin)

I got an used UTM 220 appliance cheap and thought I would put UTM Home on it.  Loaded fresh install from iso.  connect laptop to eth0 (LAN) and it gets no network connection.  tried hard coding an IP on laptop nic, still says no network connection. The green connect light was on and saw a few orange blinks, but not enough to show real activity.

suggestions on how I can get my laptop to connect to the eth0 port so I can get the configuration of the UTM done and license key installed?

used this post as my reference for the install https://martinsblog.dk/sophos-utm-use-hardware-appliances-with-home-software-license/

  • When you connect a monitor, do you see that it boots?  Which ISO did you use?  Is this the original hard drive?

  • I can watch it boot and didn't see any thing not starting but at times things fly by a bit too fast to read.  I can log on as root using monitor and key board.

I first tried the software release but got error saying can't be installed on UTM hardware.  so found the post I noted in my first post and downloaded the hardware ios (ssi-9.503-4.1.iso) and installed without any errors.  I then deleted the line in the file noted in the post.  rebooted and then tried the web interface.  I did not try before I changed that file, but don't think it would have worked.  I saved a copy of original file so I could put back the line deleted and try rebooting to make sure it not that line causing the problem.

To my knowledge the original hard drive in still in the appliance.  I was told it was just pulled from production, reset to factory setting then sold.  It does not look like the top has been opened.  but I can not say 100% for sure.

  • It sounds like everything should be OK, so I wonder if the NIC or your cable isn't dead.  If changing the cable doesn't work, try the following to swap the NICs for eth0 and eth7:

    # edit /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules
    Save the file
Restart the UTM so the new order is loaded.

  • Must have been some dust or something.  blew out the port, re-plugged in cable and wiggled to make sure in good. and powered up the UTM and it worked.  got the basic setup configured and the license file installed.  now just have to figure out the rest, sure that will take a bit.  I'm the server/SAN guy where I work, just know enough network stuff to manage the server room.  firewall a whole new territory for me, but need the vpn capability so when I travel can get to my home computers.

thanks for your help and time
