How are WAN and LAN ports assigned in bridge mode?

Which port is the WAN in bridge mode? I had to delete the 2nd port from being the WAN to make a bridge. It gave me warnings about WAN being used in rules. Now the ports are bridge but it doesn't seem there is a WAN assignment.  What am I missing here?

  • In addition after I plug in the bridge connections, the web admin port stops working.  Tried putting them on different subnets too. After connecting the UTM  there is no internet access at all either from the LAN. It is the setup with the switch downstream from the UTM and WAN on the other side. Seems ok based on the guide to setting up a brdige. It is ESXi but dont think that is the issue.

  • Hi, Mike, and welcome to the UTM Community!

If you search here, you will see that the recommended OS for UTM in ESXi  is SUSE Enterprise 64-bit.  Recommended NICs are VMXNET3.

It's preferred to bridge the modem and let the UTM get a public IP on the WAN interface.

If you have something other than a simple modem from your ISP, then you may be stuck using the UTM in bridge mode.  If that's the case, you should have one Interface defined as "Ethernet Bridge" with two NICs and a default gateway of the modem's IP.

If traffic is not passing, what does doing #1 in Rulz tell you?

    Cheers - Bob
