New mobo and i5 Install stops at detecting other devices.

Hi,

I have tried with USB and DVD to install the UTM on a new i5 build I put together. It is an ASUS mobo H270M-PLUS w/ an i5 CPU. The original NIC was not supported so I added a 4 port Intel card that now detects well with no issues. Unfortunately, it stalls after saying it is detecting other devices, nothing else in the log. It just stops. There is an HDMI port but there is also a VGA which I have been using and it seems to not be a problem at all.

I disabled the original NIC on the mobo and do not see much else I can turn off. I'm thinking maybe detecting the HDMI is causing a stop as that is not supported and past users have had issues. Once they got a VGA output they were fine though. Others have also been able to hit Alt-F2 and run a second instance of the installer which passes the 66% detecting other devices point. In my and this users computer, https://community.sophos.com/products/unified-threat-management/f/hardware-installation-up2date-licensing/75173/installation-stops-at-detecting-other-device , it gives a bus error message and halts.

Is there any hope here? I could try and learn ESXi but I dont know that at all and already have enough complicated stuff to learn. Thanks for helping!

  • Hi,

I would suspect the chipset because of the m2 support which is not yet part of a UTM or XG install.

If you find a version of ESXi that supports the m2 chipset, please post back here.

    XG115W - v20.0.2 MR-2 - Home

    XG on VM 8 - v21 GA

  • I got it running on VMware 6.5 using the M.2 just fine.  Incidentally I tried bare metal with the m.2 ssd removed and replaced with a WD IDE drive and it still did not work. Could still be the m.2 issue but can't tell. The XG firewall installs well but I had trouble setting it up so went to the UTM on VMware. Still trying to get it working though as a bridge.

  • Hi, and welcome to the UTM Community!

If you search here, you will see that the recommended adapter is VMXNET3 and the recommended OS is SUSE Enterprise 64-bit.  You will want to read through Rulz and DNS best practice.

    Cheers - Bob

  • Thanks Bob,

I will try VMXNET3, thank you.  I was using the e1000 adapter.  Sadly it will have to wait a week at least now but I am glad to be making progress...  For awhile I was just having problems.
