Nearing my license limit

When I first setup my UTM, it didn't dawn on me at all that I might have a problem with the 50 user license limit. Well, apparently my home is more connected than I thought. Between the game consoles, smart thermostats, Chromecast, Amazon Echo products, etc. I'm receiving email notifications that I'm at 90% on a much more frequent basis.

This got me thinking. How does the UTM track a "user" session. Does the UTM consider a TCP session an active user until the final TCP FIN - FIN/ACK - ACK is seen?

Is there somewhere in the WebAdmin portal you can get a glimpse of current users consuming a license?

  • UTM don't count only current sessions but IP's seen within a time-frame (7 days).

    You see active IP's at:

management / licensing / Active IP Addresses

  • That sucks. So if I have a device on my network make a single call to the Internet, my license count suffers for the next 7 days. Ouch.

Surely I'm not the only person on this forum that has too many devices at home. What do you guys do?

Has anyone purchased additional licensing from Sophos?

  • Not really an issue guys, you need to check and make sure that not all devices need to go to the internet?

Also this is a free product and 50 IPs is very generous.

Change your default gateway for devices that don't need to go to the internet.

When the licence limit becomes an issue is with IPv6 enabled, each device is counter twice.

  • You can purchase a commercial licence, but in your case it is probably cheaper to buy a small UTM which has basically 'unlimited' licences until you run out of resources.

    Or

you could use an XG for home use. The XG doesn't have an IP limit, but a ram and cpu limit. RAM is 6gb and CPS is 4 cores (real or imaginary). Ram will be the main issue if you have lots of rules and features enabled.
