UTM Licensing - User / license limitations - web server

 Hi all,

following setup: virtual server (vmware) - 3 virtual machines (1x webserver, 1x fileserver, 1x sophos utm) - traffic from / to the virtual servers from internet is being routed / nat ed through the utm appliance - in addition there is one vpn tunnel defined to connect to another location - what i do not yet understand: how are the users in utm counted? would it be the two virtual machines plus the vpn connection OR would every anonymous user that accesses these virtual machines (and gets routed via utm) be counted as well? so if the webserver would for instance serve a public website and future traffic to this site would be 10k users per day, would they need to be licensed as well?

Cheers

Tobias

  • Tobias, I recently saw an old post where someone I know is knowledgeable (don't remember who) said that the UTM counts an IP if it's in a subnet on an interface with no default gateway and it has to do an ARP request for the IP.  So, VPN users are not counted, nor are users that come in via a NAT rule or Webserver Protection.

    Cheers - Bob
