Vmware to KVM, any recommendations?

Hello,

I have been using Sophos UTM Home for a number of years on my Vmware server (ESXi 5.5 and now 6.0) without any particular issue.

However, I'm now considering to move all my VMs to KVM.

I understand that Sophos UTM shouldn't have any issues with that, but I'm wondering how my configuration will be restored, as obviously I will not have vmxnet3 cards in KVM.

In general, if you have performed the same migration, what would be your considerations/recommendations?

Thank you!

  • The UTM Configuration Backup only cares if you have an equal or larger number of NICs, not what brand/type they were in the original setup.

  • Thanks BAlfson!

Will the UTM ask me to reconfigure the interfaces as part of the configuration restore process then?

    Anyway, that's great!

    Cheers

  • No, Sandro, it won't.  Here's a trick I use when replacing one UTM device with another...

Before taking the backup, go to the 'Hardware' tab of 'Interfaces' and for each NIC that doesn't have a Virtual MAC Address set, edit it so that its Virtual MAC is the same as the physical MAC.

Another possible (but unlikely) issue could be the NIC order.  You can set eth0, eth1, etc. by editing /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules.

    Cheers - Bob
