So i was looking into various options for a new home build since i wanted to move away from a VM within my ESXi to run Sophos UTM on a bare metal. Through a pfsense Forum i found that a german distributor "Landitec" is offering a "scope7-1010" network appliance with 3x intel LAN Ports and an atom E3825. (the smaller sophos appliances utilize the E3826 which is basicly the same with a little higher cpu frequency) After inquiring i got a test unit from them to play around with for a bit. Since the CPU has AES support i was able to get around 60-75Mbit/s via OpenVPN on 1 Core and up to 180Mbit/s via a RED Connection (which will utilize multiple cores with multiple transfers). The unit was using around 6 Watt Power only and is complete passive in a nice metal package. It will get hand warm when used. The Case is only as large as two music cd packs on top of each other. So it can be put away almost anywhere and doesn't need much room and wont annoy since it has no fan. It has HDMI out so you can hook it up anywhere and install.
I also test the other "QOTOM-Q190G4" with the J1900 CPU someone else managed, and despite it having 4 cores instead of 2 and a higher cpu freq. i was not able to get much more than about 75Mbit/s over Site2Site SSL or RED which seems to be because of the missing AES Feature the J1900 does not have.
I am currently running the scope7-1010 on my home line with a 500/100 FTTH which serves 2 desktops, 1 laptop and a few wifi devices. It also serves the DMZ for my webserver. When using all IPS rules i am getting about 100Mbit/s per CPU Core.
I can recommend this tiny power efficient device to anyone looking for a small home solution that won't affect your power bill. If you want to run webproxy for alot of clients or need higher IPS throughput you probably want something like an i3 powered system.
Link to product page: https://www.landitec.com/products/open-source-appliance-solutions/scope7-open-source-firewall/scope7-1010-detail (they also offer a range of other appliances, but this one seemed the most fitting for home or small office use)
I put up a small review (in german) with iperf data and photos on my Blog: http://www.busche.org
I hope this helps anyone looking for a slim build.
