Home Appliance for Gigabit fibre connection 1000 mbps

Hello

I'm using an old HP Desktop with 2 NIC's and an Intel Quadcore Quad Core2 Q6600 @ 2.4GHz. This device is to slow for my home as I have a symmetrical Gigabit fibre connection.

Unfortunately I bought a Shuttle XPC slim XH110v with i7-6700, 8 GB ram and 120 GB m2.sata which is not compatible with Sophos home UTM9. With this PC and pfSense I get around 900 Mbps up and down.

Now I’m asking for advice for a silent or low noise PC with lots of power. I would prefer a LGA1151 socket and I’m willing to spend some serious buck on it (500 to 700 US).

So what chipset / mainboard is supported by Sophos and give me real throughput? Goal is something between 500 and 900 Mbps. It would be helpful if the HW is available in Europe.

  • Why not going for XG Firewall? IPS there is much better configurable, better scaleable and you have much more ways to tweak IPS to get an optimized Performance Expirience. (I'm just asking because you are setting up a new Firewall anyways...)

  • Why, because I have an XG on my other network. The XG is not up to UTM standards in a lot of features and IPS is most definitely one of them.

In UTM you can fine tune the UPS by removing dead or rules that cause lots of false reports, you can tune it to work for certain type of applications on your network eg no mail servers, no linux boxes, no web servers these can be turned off in UTM. but not XG.

You can block countries easier on a UTM.

You don't need to put an email address into the dhcp server to create each static IP while using clientless.

    UTM has better IPv6 functionality.

XG does has better mail handling on some functions eg imaps scanning, the MTA function s limited and difficult to setup last time I tried it.

Mail scanning and processing is very slow and is prone to corrupting attachments sometimes, the current version has improved no end.

Reporting while very comprehensive is disjointed and you can't relate some of the issues raised in the reports to twhich actual device is at fault.

Mail reporting is a joke, check it out in your daily reports.

Logging is a joke, logs are reset every time the XG is restarted.

    Software updates are not logical.

Menus are scattered and also not logical but improving. Functions are difficult to locate.

Do I need to go any further.

I am testing XG because I would like to migrate my main security to it eventually, but at the moment too many functions change in minor releases. I am currently slowly adding functions back until something breaks and I have to back it out.

  • Haha, thanks :) I was just talking about IPS, because in his Scenario this seems to be the main Component, he wants to use.

We do not need to talk about feature lacks in other components, here I fully agree...
