which NIC / CPU to use

Hello,

Since a couple of weeks I'm making a hardware inventory to be used for SG UTM 9 at home (without a hypervisor). There's a 500/500 fiber connection, 4 users with multiple devices. My intention is to use IPS and ATP. One of the difficulties is what NIC and CPU to choose:

* I would like to use a dual port Intel Pro/1000 PT adapter, but there are some forum discussions that this adapter won't work correctly due to driver problems. Is this correct and should I use something else?

* during large downloads for a single session I'll reach 500Mbit most of the time. Due to IPS and ATP the fastest dual Intel i3 core processor might be a good choice. But what about the performance for other users and their multiple devices? Do I gain better performance in the case of an Intel i5 quad core > 3.2GHz?

  • In addition to Balfson's answer, you should opt for Intel processor (i3 or i5, but make sure frequency is as high as possible for IPS). For NIC's also choose Intel if possible.
