Sophos 9 on Hyper-V adding network interface

Hi @all,

I installed a sophos 9 as VM on Hyper-V. I added initally 2 NIC one connection to Internal one to external (Internet).

Now I'm adding a 3rd NIC but its not appearing in WebAdmin?

How can I add a NIC?

Thanks

Bernhard

  • Did you try to add it live?  If so (and I don't remember off the top of my head if that is even possible or not) then restart and it may get detected.  Back up your configuration first, as always.  A better route would be to back up your configuration, add whatever hardware you feel you may need (i.e, just to be sure, give it 4-6 NICs) and re-install so they can all be detected install process.

  • Hi Euphrates,

    thanks for your reply.

I have shutdown the VM. Added the NIC restartet it. But found nothing in the Tab "hardware" nor "interfaces".

Is it really the solution the reinstall the system when hardware is changing? I can't believe. If its like this IMHO UTM is not a professional solution for businesses.

  • Hey Bernhard.

That's really unusual. I've had my share of UTM running on Hyper-V, and I've added network interfaces to my setups many, many times, and never ran into problems, so it really is NOT like this.

It will not be listed at the "Interfaces" tab, as that would be your logical interfaces and a new interface will show only after you create it, but it should be listed at the "Hardware" tab.

To confirm that your "hardware" interface is there, can you get into the shell? If so, login and type

    ifconfig

It should list at least eth0, eth1 and eth2 (that would be your new interface). If it does, then it's there. If not, then your virtual interface was not added to your VM properly, and you should look at Hyper-V, not UTM.

If your eth2 is there, to add it a new interface using WebAdmin go into Interfaces & Routing / Interfaces and click "New Interface.." button. Then select "eth2" as hardware and setup your interface as per your needs.

  • Hi Giovani,

    thanks for your reply.

IMHO Hyper-V is adding the thrid interface correctly. But most Linux derivates need that the adapter is added e.g. on Debian to /etc/network/interfaces.

Something seems to happen, as when I'm adding the third NIC UTM seems to reorder the NICs as the outbound NIC is not reachable anymore on its IP-address.

Tried to run setifhwd.plx nothing changed. Thrid NIC is not appearing in Tab "Hardware"...

  • Bernhard, you can change the order at the command line by editing the /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules file and then restarting the ASG so the new order is loaded.
