SG210 for 90 users ?

Hi,

We plan to replace an old Netgear router by a new UTM and our provider made a proposal for a SG210.
Will this hardware be sufficient regarding the following facts :
- We are about 90 users
- We use 25 Mbps download (peak at 40Mpbs) and 3 Mbps (upload) on our dedicated symetrical 100Mbps internet line
- We mostly consume web apps (Google Apps, ...)
- We have 2 VPNS with low traffic (3MBps max)
- We plan to use most features of the UTM excepted antispam, in connection with our Active Directory.
- There will be 10 AP55c managed by the SG210.

I'm a bit disapointed about the correct sizing because I have different opposing points of view :

On one hand, the Sophos sizing guide indicates that we'd better use a SG230 or even SG310 (www.virtualsecurity.nl/.../sg-series-sizing -guide.pdf).

On the other hand, we also have an other proposal for a Fortinet 100D for which official sizing guide indicates it's the correct sizing ((competitive.myfortinet.com/product_sizing) and an "independant" study saying that SG210 beats Fortinet 100D (www.sophos.com/.../miercomutmperformancetestingreport.pdf

Do you think SG210 will fit our needs for the next years ?

Thank you for our help,

Fred

  • Hi, Fred, and welcome to the UTM Community!

We don't know enough about your business nor about the users' overall usage levels.  I would lean toward the 310 because it has a dual-core 3.5GHz i3 compared to the 210's dual-core Celeron at 2.7GHz.

Also, depending on other issues affecting the number of IPs a UTM would count, a 150-IP subscription with your own hardware might make sense.

If you're uncomfortable with the 210, ask your reseller to get a trial unit for you.  I would pick a reseller that you can pay to configure the unit so that you quickly can subject it to the loads it will need to handle.  If you determine that it's not going to be enough for you, it's quick and easy to backup the configuration from the 210 and apply it to a 230 or 310.

    Cheers - Bob
