What budget hardware?

So I've replaced a £60 plastic nether ADSL modem router with an old shuttle xpc which is now handling dhcp and web filtering for our small network.

However I'm worried about

a) power consumption

 and

b) non 27/7, non ssd hard disk in the xpc

I read about a German guy who found a Terra Black Dwarf on eBay and is successfully running the UTM on it and it got me thinking what other smart, budget buys are there?

Thank you!

  • You could try using a PC Enignes APU, or a NetGate Box but there are a few minor problems with getting it set up. It has no video out, so you'd either have to do a blind setup while doing the install in parallel on a virtual machine so you know what buttons to press. Or you install it onto a virtual drive copy that over to the miniPCI SSD. It it is all quite fiddly but it seems to work. Also the device is fairly limited in computing power. I am tossing the idea around to try  a PC Engines APU myself, but I am quite worried that the thing just doesn't have enough juice to do the web filtering on a 5 person network with average web use.

Regarding installation you can look through the comments on this Sophos Cummunity thread.

    Edit 14.05.16 13.30

Just to have HW with Sophos pre installed  in the loop too: Have a look at this  home appliance   . But I don't know if they ship this outside the Netherlands. I does look like it is not manufactured by Sophos, only certified by them. (I cant find this with resellers in my country)  It looks like it is an rebranded PC Engines APU1d4.
