Five years later and this is still needing more clarity.
Here is what Sophos emails me:
Thank you for your interest in Sophos UTM Home Edition. The information in this email will guide you through the download and installation process.
How Do I Install Sophos UTM?
- Download the ISO image found here: https://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/utm-downloads.aspx
- Burn this image onto a CD.
- Insert CD and boot the PC you wish to dedicate to Sophos UTM from the CD-ROM drive.
- Follow the on-screen installation instructions. The Webadmin URL will be shown in the final step of installation.
- Point your browser to the web-based configuration tool (WebAdmin).
- Follow the wizard to set up a basic configuration.
- Upload the attached home use license file under Management >> Licensing
Why not clear this up after so many years. We are technical people yet Sophos make us feel stupid by not
giving us the information to make an educated decision. Even the labeling sucks. I'm installing my Free Home Version
on real hardware, so any intelligent human would naturally download the version that says "hardware appliance" vs "software appliance"
.... duh, nope WRONG. This is off to a horrible start to evaluate a very expensive piece of enterprise software/hardware vendor.
Get with it Sophos... well I'm guessing they don't pay attention to these forums.
How many user accounts do I need to interact with Sophos? Two so far, one to get the free home version and one to post on this forum.
I think I'll need yet another If I want to to dive into commercial offerings.
Doesn't look good to have such an annoying start.
