Astaro with ATT U-Verse

Thanks for the response. I've done some additional reading on other forums and it seems that the CPE issue has been around for a couple of years which makes it rather surprising for AT&T not to have addressed that to date for customers who use multiple static IPs. There is occasional mention on forums of AT&T working on a static IP hardware solution but nothing official stated from AT&T which could very well imply there is no plan to do so. 

One idea would be to run UTM as a VM with multiple virtual NICs but I'm doubtful that 5 virtual nics would suffice or work going by this post on the AT&T forums..

Unfortunately I have a need for more than one static IP. I could make do with 4 static addresses which is what I am currently using with one to spare, but I will likely remain with the current DSL configuration which works as expected with no issues to report.

I'm also not certain that I would be able to retain the same allocated IPs that I have now with a switch to u-verse. I'll consider cancelling the U-verse order for the time being and revisit in the future to see if there will ever be a bridge mode CPE from AT&T. If it looks like DSL may eventually be phased out, there may not be much of a choice but to switch to another ISP.

You could probably make it work with more physical nics, or if you were running the UTM software on a virtualized platform, it would work with multiple vnics (I have run it this way in the lab, I have a setup with a U-Verse connection as a failover).  It is admittedly a clumsy way to set it up, but as you noted, this has been an issue with the VDSL CPE equipment that AT&T provides with U-Verse for quite a while, and I doubt it will change.

Thanks, I have a UTM instance on a VMWare host that has multiple nics with 3 to spare for UTM, its a new install so it will take some configuring to get going once U-Verse is set up. I'm glad to know that you at least have UTM working with the vnics in a lab environment. The only challenge I see ahead would be the DNS changes needed as it appears from at least one other forum that it would not be possible to retain the same static IP addresses that are currently allocated on the DSL connection.

We have a few setups using U-verse business with static IP's.  I'll see if I can't post some of screen dumps showing how to setup the AT&T router over the weekend.  It works fine for data, and certainly inexpensive compared to alternatives.  But not always a good choice for multiple VoIP / SIP circuits - depends on your distance from the central office.  Where U-verse residential uses a V-RAD and includes video, AT&T's business U-verse doesn't offer video, at least in this market, and goes straight to AT&T's CO, so the distances can be long.

When we did our first U-verse business setup, I had to transfer and call back through a number of support dept folks to find someone who knew what I was trying to do and what they needed to do.  Eventually, I got to the right place, AT&T's beta setup department for new U-verse equipment.  Most AT&T people I spoke with didn't even know they had such a place, let alone how to get me to them.

We do use the 5 static IP's from U-verse.  But, to answer Mike101's question above, I was told by AT&T techs that you cannot keep the same IP's because of the way AT&T routes their circuits - and that does mirror our experience with them.  Basically different groups inside AT&T handle the different products they offer, and the available IP ranges stay with each group.  So as you switch technologies, you have to trade out for new IP's.

The pkg AT&T currently offers business in our area is approx 18 down, 1.5 up, max.  Generally a bit less, but usually pretty consistent.  I don't think they're offering the 24/3 in business product yet, but YMMV.  I have heard that they will be offering 24/3 U-verse to business users at some point.

You can't trust what sales reps tell you about the details of technology.   They smell a commission and "yes" you all the way to the bank.  But then you knew that, right?

Yep, had one of our engineers get U-Verse static IPs allocated at his home (we nerds have to have our static IPs!), and he had to show the AT&T tech how to configure the gateway [:)]  Decent service, but the techs are generally clueless when it comes to networking beyond the basics they are shown in training.  The AT&T Guy that setup one of our backup circuits (U-Verse Business) didn't know how to use our existing 66 blocks / 24 pair cable to cross connect / extend the demarc to our server room... I showed him how to do it (actually ended up doing it myself).

Also, you may well need to ask AT&T to open your email server ports (exchange server, etc.) - they often seem to forget.
