Is there a version of 'Free Home Use XG Firewall' that runs in a BIS-7870 security barebone PC?

Hi there.

Just activated my good old BIS-7870 barebone system again.

It was running the old free home Sophos UTM v9.5 (2017) firewall, totally outdated and license expired.

So, I checked out the Sophos website, and noticed that they still offered a free home version, and the .iso filename was: SW-18.5.2_MR-2-380.iso

I put it on a USB stick, 'plopped' it in my BIS-7870 system, and I had to wait some time, before I heard an alarmsound, and the display showed the message:

########################################################

Sophos FIRMWARE INSTALLER

Created on: #Thu Nov 11  20:13:30 UTC 2021

Firmware version: #18.5.2.380

Contains Firmware for: SF01V SO01

########################################################

Error : Cannot install this firmware

RAM size is lower than minimum requirement of 4GB, Error 4

press y to reboot

Well, that was a bummer. My BIS-7870 is max 2Gb RAM, and I cannot expand that.

My UTM v9.5 version ran beautifully on 2GB.

My question:

Is there and OLDER version that runs in 2GB, anyone?

Would be very pleased to get some info on this.

  • Moin Robbert,

since you won't get any help on this matter from Sophos directly, do yourself a favour and use a mini pc with at least 4 Gb RAM.

Yes, I think I have to find some other use for my BIS-7870. Just a pity that it can't run on more than 2Gb.

I'm scanning the local Turkish suppliers for some Intel NUC kind of PC.

Do you have an advise on a suitable unit??

    Cheers
