Upgrade from ASG V7 to V8 (or V9)

Dear Community

This seems to be a strange question:

How can I upgrade an Astaro ASG V7 to V8 or V9?

Here is the explanation:
By the end of January 2018, my ASG Server (bought from Thomas Krenn) went out
on me: obviously the disk drive crashed or broke - it is no longer
visible and the system cannot boot. The system was brought up to ASG V8 in 2015.

Fortunately I had made a clone drive - but unfortunately that was in
2012 with the Astaro V7 release. I installed this disk ... and the
system booted fine. It even applied six updates from 7.507 to 7.513 -
magic! I wanted to apply the latest backup from January, 27th, made
under V8, however. I got an error message because of wrong syntax - not
really a surprise, because the backup from V8 is presumably not backward
compatible with V7.

Next I did a renew for my UTM Home Use License - now the License ID is 1439902.
Before that I took an unnecessary detour over a Full License.

My System offers my an upgrade to V8 with an URL of: ftp://ftp.astaro.com/pub/Astaro_Security_Gateway/v8/
I tried to start this, but got an error message "550 Failed to change directory".
When I examined the FTP-Directory, it shows an empty "Astaro_Security_Gateway"-directory - there is no "V8"-object.

Here is my question: How can I upgrade from my old ASG V7 to V8 or even higher
AND load the config backup from January 27 written under ASG V8?

Thanx a lot for useful hints!!!!

  • Hallo Paul and welcome to the TM Community!

Paul, I would load the 9.509 software ISO.  Your V8 backup should restore to it with no problem.

  • Hallo Bob

Many thanks for your advice!!! I used the link you provided and did a download of the ISO-image.

Then I used Rufus to create a bootable USB drive on a USB-Stick from the ISO-file and configured the BIOS of my Server
    to boot from it.

AND: Hurray, it booted sucessfully and guided me thru the installation of ASG V9.

HOWEVER: The creation of the new boot disk failed with the following message:
"ERROR: install.tar wasn't found on the installation media"

When I looked at the installation media, I found a file named "install.tar" in the top level directory "install". Strange!

I have included the zip-file "install.zip" that was written at the point of failure onto the USB-stick.

Could you pleas give me some advice how to fix the issue?

Thanks a lot and kind regards

    Paul

  • The Rufus install is unsupported, Paul, so I've not worked with it.  That said, I know there are threads here that detail the tricks or link to an article that does.

    I think I spent US$35 on a USB CD/DVD optical drive.

  • Dear Bob

Great!!! I istalled the new release sucessfully and got the config backup -  written under ASG V8 - restored.
AND: the system purrs like a sewing machine!

First I was a bit reluctant, but since I had already a DVD with the ISO image burnt onto it and I have
some USB-BR/DVD/CP-burners/players, I gave it a try - AND it worked!

I like the convenience of booting from an USB-Stick - but I never thought to buy fast versions.

Now I´ve learnt my lesson, once more: many Thanks!!

    We can close the issue.
