Mini PC for Sophos UTM 9

Hi,

so I'm looking for a cheap way to set up a firewall. I was thinking something along the lines of a mini PC with 2 network cards (obviously). Are there any special "hidden" things i need to look out for? E.g. does Sophos only work in UEFI/legacy? How much processing power in terms of CPU do I need for about 4 people, typical workload like emails, web browsing and sometimes streaming and maybe some active-directory (windows only) ? I know there are some utm hardware appliances, but they seem to be priced relatively steep..

  • Hi Marc,

you will need 2Ghz Processor, 2+ GB RAM, and 40Gb Harddisk. this should be enough for your settings environment.

Sophos UTM Hardware are between 1,46GHz Dual Core Atom Baytrail with 2GB RAM (SG 105) till Xeon E5 2x10 core 2.8 GHz with 48 GB RAM (SG 650).

  • Hello!

I'm using this baord and it works fine since a half year now: https://www.pcengines.ch/apu2c4.htm

Some instructiosn how to install (unfortuntaly only in German right now but Google translator should be fine) https://blog.it-prosec.de/sophos-utm-home-edition-9-4-auf-alix-board-apu2c4-installieren/

I'm using a mSATA SSD with 128GB and a Compex WLE600VX - 802.11ac/a/b/g/n miniPCI  for Wifi (which works fine up to now). If you want to use the Wifi module you need to connect by ssh and edit "/etc/modules" by adding "ath10k_pci" to the file.

    Regards

  • Hello Vore,

it seems very interessting, in fact i wanted to build something like that with RasberryPi, but i think i will try your suggestion first.

  • Hello!

RaspberryPI is not supported (as far as I know). Sophos needs an X86 processor (Pi is an ARM processor).

Also you have 3NICs (which is useful for a separate network)  mSata as well as PCI express ports. I expect much more performance then connecting this to USB to RaspberryPi. And overall the power consumption is pretty low. My CPU load is never going about 15%, Ram usage is around 2Gb. Only HDD space is useful. I installed 16Gb (was included in a set) at the beginning and this space was to small.

Hope this helps.. I was looking for a suitable hardware for months before I found this platform by  a chance. I just want to share it (no, im not selling it ;-)
