New to UTM:s , noob question

Hello.

So I planned to setup a Sophos UTM home version at my apartment.

This is my setup at the moment:

Got my ISP Cable modem (docsis) configured so its in bridge mode + Asus router that handles NAT and DHCP.

Is it possible to put a sophos utm in between the cable modem and the router in a (Transparent mode??) without loosing internet. (I want to keep the asus router to handle DHCP).

How is this done? Is it even possible?

The cable modem gets the public ip and the router handles the home network.

Was going to install sophos on a quad core old pc with a intergrated LAN port + a pcie NIC with dual gigabit ports.

Sorry for bad english and also thanks for any replies!

  • Hi,

you can push the appliance as a bridge.

So the UTM will be a layer 2 bridge.

Same for Sophos XG. The XG should be easy to configure all protection types as a bridge deployment.

    https://community.sophos.com/kb/en-us/122973

There you can setup it in the wizard.

    Cheers

  • Hej Dennis,

I would have the UTM do DHCP and not put the UTM in bridge mode.  If the Asus is also a wireless access point, then put it behind the UTM in bridge mode and use it as a wireless switch.  Otherwise, I would simply set the Asus aside in case the PC running UTM has a problem down the road.  If you were to search this forum, you would find that these are the recommendations made by experienced UTM users.

    Cheers - Bob
PS And your English is a lot better than my Svenska!
