Configure UTM 9.x to send reports and alerts through GoDaddy mail server /relay?

I tried this post a few days back and don't seem to find it now. Sorry for re-asking or hope I am not cross posting.

I use Mediacom Cable Internet service. I have my domain name with GoDaddy and use their mail server / one free e-mail account as my primary e-mail provider.

Everything was working up to about June 23rd, I was able to get e-mail alerts and my UTM reports and backup config files every night. This stopped.

I even applied a config file from the previous week and then even 2 months prior thinking if I messed up a setting that will fix the issue. It has not.

I called GoDaddy to make sure I had all the needed info for in/out going mail to their mail server. Then trying with and with out using smart host, trying to get my Sophos to be able to send me alerts and e-mails. My regular pop 3 e-mail works, I can send and receive mail all day to both the GoDaddy and Mediacombb e-mail accounts just fine with my e-mail client. I just can not get Sophos UTM to send me my reports and alerts.

Anyone out there use GoDaddy and send your Sophos outgoing alerts and e-mails through them? What are the configuration settings you are using?

I created both a DNS host and looked up the I.P. and created a normal host definition.

first I just went to the management and set up my notification there with no smart host settings.

Next I tried to use the smart host settings.

Sophos can not get it's mail sent out.

Below is some info from the log, I think I am looking at the right log.

Happy to try any suggestions, this has me very puzzled. Sadly Godaddy does not have any tips on their website for use with an Sophos product. When speaking to the tech support, they did not know of any staff with UTM experience and could not offer much, other than what they gave me for tls and unsecured settings. He did know and understood the term smart host, and they have been good to work with and have no falts with their tech support.

    Hey cmp. It seems you are using port 25, which is filtered by most non-enterprise WAN links:

    smtp.secureserver.net [68.178.213.37]:25 Connection timed out

    Try setting it to 587. If you want to use TLS, set to 465 and tick "Use TLS" option, as per the information you provided:

    "TLS on port 465 , your e-mail address and password

    non secure / no TLS use  - use ports 80, 25, 587, and 3535"

    Hello,

    I have smart host turned off.

    Using just the e-mail settings under management / notifications.

    tried smtp.secureserver.net [68.178.213.37] with port 587, no tls, without and with my logon / password. Nothing sent out.

    changed back to a DNS host definition for godaddy smtp out. and 587, witl logon password, no tls, nothing.

    Any further thoughts?  I assume you are using Godaddy by chance?

    Without exact details, did you create a dns host definition for godaddy and smtpout.secureserver.net?

    and using 587 with logon and password?

    I have a new machine to be building me a new firewall, I do not want to build the firewall up from scratch since I have vlans setup and that is a pain to configure,just want to copy over the config file. But maybe if needed I will have to try to rebuild from scratch and see if I can get the e-mail working. The configure the wan for management and delete the local eth and make it a vlan interface. Besides me there has to be someone else in the USA or maybe globally using GoDaddy for domain and e-mail with UTM. SO what exactly is all being set and or if smart host is used or not? I am sure when I ever do figure it out, it will be a easy stupid setting I am guessing.

    Dont know about the reputation of your IP address, but if you are using a home internet connection, the only way go daddy will accept your mail is if you relay it through your isp or something similar. You can troubleshoot mail problems really quick by using a telnet session as follows in windows (may have to install telnet client in newer windows) or use linux

    C:\Users\bill>telnet 68.178.213.37 25

    554 p3plibsmtp02-13.prod.phx3.secureserver.net bizsmtp IB106. Connection refused. xx.xx.xx.xx is listed on the Policy Block List (PBL).  <www.spamhaus.org/.../xx.xx.xx.xx> Please visit http://www.spamhaus.org/pbl/ for more information. Connection to host lost.

    You can clearly see that my ip xx.xx.xx.xx is blacklisted so I can't send any mail from home without using my ISPs smarthost. Your problem may not be the same but a telnet session will reveal the details about your problem more clearly.

    This is odd, I have had Godaddy e-mail for many years and everything was working just fine.

    MY ISP  provider is Mediacom. Anyone using Sophos UTM with Mediacom home service? I have tried a few combinations with the Mediacom with no luck, but will try again and for go the Godaddy smtp.

    So lest see what I can do or get lucky to figure out with Mediacom.

    Chad, your ISP may only recently have begun blocking port 25, but that's definitely the problem in your last log.  I'm not familiar with GoDaddy's mail system, but I have a client that uses his gmail account for the smarthost in the UTM.

    If you're having trouble making this work, show a link to GoDaddy's configuration guide for email clients and a picture of a configuration with 587 that was unsuccessful for you.

    And yes that is what I was thinking, a change more on the ISP side, and not on Sophos.

    Been real busy and just not had much time to dig into it. I will see what I can provide for the Go Daddy side of things.

    Go Daddy has their secure and insecure settings. Go Daddy has great help support when I call them, just sadly they do nt have any info or configuration help files for using with Sophos devices.

    I am also working to Virtualize my UTM.

     

    Thank you for the information, and I had read about the gmail angle, and think from last read on line Gmail was still allowing that connection still so if all else that might be the way to go is via Gmail. I have been looking into running my own internal mail server for just internal system messages like this.  Never enough time in the day or week / weekend for me.
