Hi
I read about using Open DNS / Google DNS / Norton DNS to have significant performance than the default ISP DNS and certain levels of Security by using it.
I have been using Open DNS all these while simply assuming it is indeed faster as I admit I do not know the know how to measure it.
Recently, from the Astaro Feed,
"Fast DNS For Best Performance
Your DNS information can have a significant effect on many areas in ASG, especially for Web Filtering. ISP servers can be erratic; public servers such as those from Google, or OpenDNS give a free and noticeable boost in responsiveness. DNS Benchmark is a handy (and free) evaluation tool. You can set your desired DNS servers from Network Services-->DNS-->Forwarders."
Thus I learnt there is a GUI DNS Benchmark tool which should show me the real performance.
But the tool shows that my ISP DNS is Significantly Faster then Open DNS, Norton DNS and Google DNS
Thus I need your advice if I should continue to use Open DNS / Norton DNS or in my case the ISP DNS is simply better and makes more sense?
On one hand, it is cool to use Open DNS / Norton DNS for the additional security while no way to know if it is really faster.
On the other hand, with such results, seems that I should stick to my ISP DNS and simply depend on Astaro Web Security to protect against malicious sites?
Below are the DNS I tested.
StarHub is my Internet Service Provider.
Open DNS
208.67.220.220
208.67.220.222
208.67.222.220
208.67.222.222
FamilyShield
208.67.222.123
208.67.220.123
StarHub
218.186.1.58
218.186.2.16
Norton DNS
A
198.153.192.40
198.153.194.40
B
198.153.192.50
198.153.194.50
C
198.153.192.60
198.153.194.60
Google DNS
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4
Attached is the Screenshot of my results.
1) Why is it that I do not see Open DNS performing better?
2) Open DNS and Norton DNS do have Data Centre in Singapore.
3) I am not sure if Google DNS have a Data Centre in Singapore as it is not shown on their website.
4) In terms of Security, Norton and Open DNS did state they protect against Phishing etc but I never seen it in action yet.
5) But what does Google Provide in Terms of Security?
6) Do you think it is worth to bear with the slowness of using other DNS for better Security or simply ISP DNS makes more sense?
