httpproxy maxxing out the cpu every day at same time - happened with 9.715-4 and still happening with 9.716-2

I'm running version: 9.716-2 on a VPS (4 vCPU, 8gb of RAM and 200GB disk) and every day httpproxy  pushes the CPU to 100% (according to tom). It starts to ramp up at 11.55am, peaks at about about 12pm and has dropped back to its usual 5% by 12.15pm.

This also happened with 9.715-4 and is a real pain, as for 15 minutes a day there is effectively no internet connection available at all.

The puzzling thing is that the only two lines involving httpproxy in the crontab (below), don't match up with that regular schedule around mid day.

14,29,44,59 * * * * httpproxy /var/chroot-http/usr/bin/virus_feedback_uploader

6,16,26,36,46,56 * * * * httpproxy /var/chroot-http/usr/bin/virus_sample_uploader -p /var/chroot-http

This started happening about two months ago but wasn't associated with a change in firmware. The disk space is barely half used and the memory usage picks up a bit when the CPU maxxes out each day but only to about 25% of that available..

Can anyone recommend any additional diagnostics I should be running? Or any possible solutions? Many thanks.

  • I think i had such a behaviour many years ago too. Can you check under "Update" how often you machine checks for updates (firmware/paterns) ? If it is daily, then you might have the cause for it.

You can set it to manual just to test if it is the cause.
