OpenVPN for Android - No Connection

Hello, everyone! To be honest, I haven't used the VPN on my Android phone for a few months now... but I noticed that it no longer works.
It always comes:

I've also done some research and there seems to be a workaround with a command (which I don't know right now) to "downgrade" the security, but to be honest I didn't want to do that either.
This somehow has something to do with the settings of my SSL VPN encryption...
I currently have:

On the Windows PCs it works without any problems with the Sophos SSL VPN.....
But on the cell phone, this OpenVPN makes the error described above.
Even a new import of the profile brought nothing.
In another forum I have something from AES-256-GCM? read, but I don't have that to choose from with the SSL VPN.
With the Android app "OpenVPN Connect - Fast & Safe SSL VPN Client" the connection works immediately without any problems, but you have almost no setting options.
And with the "OpenVPN for Android" app, the error comes up.
According to my research, however, this is not an error in the app, but it apparently no longer supports "such weak" connections.
Does anyone have an idea what I need to change so that the connection works again with the OpenVPN for Android app?

And please forgive my, my English skills are not very Good, so i used Google Translator as a help =)

Thank you & best regards

  • With the Android app "OpenVPN Connect - Fast & Safe SSL VPN Client" the connection works immediately without any problems, but you have almost no setting options.

Because it takes your settings from your profile.  There are actually setting options if you need to set them, but you have to actually open them up and edit the profile.  I use this version on my phone, and it works flawlessly.

I used to use OpenVPN for Android, but I just kept running into connection issues with it.  It was never stable for me and would crash a lot. (You can continue in German if you wish, a few of us can still help you regardless - my brain says it's too early to use some German today haha).

  • Good Morning,

    Okay thanks for your answer!

So i switch to this "fast & safe" app...
But i read on other internet forums that this app is supposed to no longer support "weak" connections like the OpenVPN for Android App

I thought it was because SSL VPN doesn't support AES 246 GCM, with which it should supposedly work, but unfortunately (for whatever reason...) you can't select that with SSL VPN, although it's already available with IPSec, for example

    Kind Regards

  • That might have to do with old TLS versions that aren't supported and vulnerable.  I'm no expert on SSL/TLS, but that would be my guess, along with the recent change away from SSL VPN client to Sophos Connect client.
