UTM Up2Date Rollout Phases

Hello,

When a new release of UTM software is announced, the following rollout plan is typically included:

  • In phase 1 you can download the update package from our download server.
  • During phase 2 we will make it available via our Up2Date servers in several stages.
  • In phase 3 we will make it available via our Up2Date servers to all remaining installations.

"UTM Up2Date 9.708 Released" was announced on 11/24/2021.  As far as I know, phase 2 & 3 have not been completed, but "UTM Up2Date 9.709 Released" was now announced on 01/24/2022.

Is there any particular reason why 9.708 has not been made generally available via Up2Date prior to 9.709 being made available?

As a second question, I typically like to wait until software updates have been in the wild for a short while before committing to an update.  For UTM software, I usually wait until it's generally available via Up2Date.  Is this perhaps not a best practice in this case?

Thanks.

No, sometimes this just happens, so go and download the file and update manually.

But it is generally available, whether you download it manually or potentially wait on a rollout to occur that is general availability.  Up2Date is just a convenience.  Even though my UTM was working fine, Up2Date wouldn't work half the time - one update I would have to do manually, then the next one would update on its own. No rhyme or reason that I could see, but I ended up reloading for some reason and it worked ever since the reload.

  • Amodin seems not to be correct...

    See Release Notes of 9.709:

"During the phased rollout of version 9.708 we discovered an issue that affected the SPX Mail Encryption user portal. We decided to put the rollout of version 9.708 on hold until we could publish a fix for that issue in 9.709. We will continue the rollout of 9.708 alongside 9.709 and we recommend that customers who have not already upgraded to 9.708 apply both upgrades together."

Yeah... not really.  .708 was pushed out in Nov 2021.  What you quoted wasn't until just a few days ago with the .709 update.  The SPX issue wasn't found until well after the published updates were making their way to the UTMs.

Not only that, but there is a jaded history of the rollouts not reaching UTMs - I'm talking years' worth of that just not happening, not just this update and I am one of many of those people not receiving updates all the time.

This issue does in fact happen.  Often.  So, no I am correct in everything I posted.
