Problem using VPN for browsing the web and downloading

I was getting poor performance downloading using my VPN service and now the link has been lost.

I suspect there may be some firewall rules concerning the use of a vpn to download items such as youtube videos from the web.

Please could somebody advise if this is correct and how can I enable these downloads please?

    Hi ,

Thank you for reaching out to the Community!

Could you please elaborate on your issue? Did you configure Remote Access VPN or site to site?

What is the current firmware version on your firewall?

    Thanks,

  • Hi and many thanks for picking up on this.  I am not a coder or network specialist but I do not believe I am using remote access.  I am using openVPN plugin on Network Manager in attempt to use youtube-dl to grab a video.

I tried using the VPN because I thought perhaps youtube-dl was being stopped by YouTube server.  In fact the video download was still stopped even though I was using VPN so I then wondered if the problem was due to some Sophos rules, hence my question.

I have no idea of the details of the firewall but the Sophos SG135 is now running firmware 9.705-3.

The error message I get is "Unable to extract video data."  I made a few searches and it is quite possible that all downloads are being stopped by this application.  The extractor python script gives the error but why the extractor fails is beyond my skills. It probably has nothing to do with Sophos but am asking simply to exclude possibilities.

    Thanks again for your reply.
